Her much-awaited film Naan Mahan Alla with Karthi has just hit the screens and actress Kajal Aggarwal can’t hide her happiness!
“I was keeping my fingers crossed and hoping the film would appeal to the audiences and well, it did,” she grins.
Kajal plays Priya, a “perfectly normal, relatable middle-class girl” who falls in love with Karthi. “How things get messed up for Karthi after he meets me is what the film is about,” she laughs, and as an afterthought, adds, “It’s actually not easy to play a normal girl. If it’s a character that’s out of the ordinary, one can easily portray it on screen. It’s very difficult to underplay a character, but director Suseenthiran was very clear on what he wanted.”
Talking about Suseenthiran, she says, “He was positive about the film right from the beginning. In fact, when he came to Hyderabad to narrate the script, he was so confident that the film would click. His enthusiasm is infectious.”
Kajal is also a little amused by rumours about how Karthi and she are in a relationship. “Karthi and I are genuine friends. We hang out with a lot of other people and so, there should be no room for any rumours!” she says.
But she maintains, “Of all the people I’ve worked with, my chemistry with Karthi is really good. But of course, it’s probably because it’s a breezy love story.”
Was language a problem while shooting for the movie? “Though I’m not fluent in Tamil, I have a theatre background and am used to learning a lot of dialogues by heart. That helped,” she says.
Naan Mahan Alla is a crucial film for Kajal as her last three Kolywood films – Palani, Bommalattam and Modhi Vilayadu — failed to give her that big break. “I’ve given my 100 per cent to each film. I’ve worked hard and wished the film to click at the BO. But I believe in destiny. All I can do is hope and pray the audience appreciates our efforts,” she answers diplomatically.
So, what’s next? “There were reports that my Tollywood hit Magadheera is being made in Hindi and other languages. But I can’t comment now if I will be a part of it. And it’s too early to talk about me being cast in Lingusamy’s project as well. As of now, I have been offered a few projects in Tamil and I’m going to choose with care. Meanwhile, I’ve Brindhavanam with Jr NTR, two untitled projects with Darshan and Nag Chaitanya and Merupu with Ram Charan,” she signs off.
