Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday said the Varanasi blast was an attempt to weaken the country’s resolve to fight terrorism.
“This is an unfortunate incident. It is an attempt to weaken our resolve to fight forces of terrorism. The terrorists won’t succeed,” Manmohan Singh told reporters at a function here.
The blast in the temple town of Uttar Pradesh Tuesday evening killed a two-year-old girl and left over 20 people injured, including some foreigners.
The prime minister, expressing sympathies with the victims, said: “My heart goes out to those who have suffered. We will do all that we can do to provide them succour.”
Manmohan Singh also appealed to people to “maintain calm and peace”.
The prime minister has asked the union home ministry for a report on the explosion, described by the ministry as of low-intensity.
