Chennai: A fisherman from Tamil Nadu was killed and another injured after the Sri Lankan navy opened fire on them at sea near the Tamil Nadu coast.
The fishermen belong to a village in Pudukottai, about 350 kilometres from Chennai.
Manivel, who survived the attack, says, "I left with Pandian around 7 am. The Lankan navy arrived around 4 or 5 pm. They opened fire when they saw us fishing on the rear side of our boat. Pandian died and then they left."
Meanwhile, an angry Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi has sent a telegram to the Prime Minister demanding his immediate intervention to end such killings.
Karunanidhi, in his letter has also asked the PM to take up the matter with the Sri Lankan government, saying that atrocities of the Lankan navy are continuing unabated.
Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin has earlier informed the state assembly that the Chief Minister had sent a telegram to Delhi. "We have been taking up the issue time and again with the Centre, which in turn had been taking it up with the Sri Lankan government," he said.
The AIADMK slammed the state government over the "continued killing" of Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Lankan Navy over the past four years and asked "whether the state government will just stop with writing letters to the Centre or would take any action."
