Chowrasia injures wrist ahead of Avantha Masters
Gurgaon: SSP Chowrasia's title defence at the Avantha Masters suffered a setback after the Indian golfer injured his wrist during practice on the eve of the tournament, here on Wednesday.
Chowrasia complained of pain in his left wrist while practicing at the DLF Golf and Country Club for the richest golf tournament in India (USD 2.3 million prize).
He then decided to skip his practice in order to be fit for the main competition beginning here on Thursday.
"My left wrist has been hurting, so I chose to skip practice. I have been to the physiotherapist and hopefully on Thursday I will feel better.
"I am not able to hit my 100 percent, I have had to make a slight change to my swing but it is not a big thing," Chowrasia told reporters.
If Chowrasia wins the Avantha Masters 2012, he would become the first Indian to successfully defend a European title.
He would also join Arjun Atwal and Jeev Milkha Singh, on three European Tour titles.
After a mediocre last season, Chowrasia is looking forward to this year.
"Last year's season was not so great. This year, I am more confident. The green is hard and there is less rough, it is also a grainy course this year. I feel Indians and Asians will do well this year," Chowrasia said.
Besides Chowrasia, the tournament boasts of top Indian golfers, Jeev Milkha Singh, Shiv Kapur and Rahi Gangjee.
The international stars in the fray include 2004 British Open winner Todd Hamilton of the United States and American Peter Uhlhein, the former world number one amateur.
The tournament also includes two-time Major winner John Daly of the United States.
