Pune: Friendship Day party at a farmhouse in temple village Theur landed 489 youths, mostly students of Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies (SIMS), Khadki, in the police net on Sunday night. The party started around 10 pm but Pune rural police landed at the sprawling Sindhu bungalow on the farmhouse around 11 pm and played party pooper.
The allegation against 254 boys and 235 girls, mostly MBA students is that they organised a late-night party and consumed alcohol without permission.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Rural) Ravindra Pardeshi said most of them were SIMS students. "The party was held without permission. We found a cache of liquor from the spot. No narcotic substance was found," he said. Cops said 300 liquor bottles were seized.
Vidya Yerawadekar, principal director of Symbiosis International University (SIU) said the students had permission for a late night out. "There are around 600 students in the hostel studying MBA and are above 18 years. They need some break since the course is rigorous. We allow them to stay out till 12.30 am thrice a month," she said.
"On Sunday, they had officially taken permission from the director to go for a party. Since they did not return after 12.30 am, the director called a few students and came to know about the incident," said Yerawadekar who said the varsity paid the bail amount. "All were staying at the hostel and thus their parents were not here. On the request of parents, and as many students did not have enough money, SIU paid the amount. It will be recovered from them," she said.

One student said, "We are not criminals. We had not done any mischief. It was just a party. We had planned to wind up by 12 pm." Police arrested 88 boys under sections of the Bombay Police Act and the Bombay Prohibition Act, eight of them for organising the party without permission. No girl was arrested.

Niloufer Ebrahim, counsellor, said, "If they were above 18, were not causing harm to anyone and had not broken any rules, I don't see why their party had to be busted. I would say if they...knew what they were doing or their parents knew what they were doing...they were within their rights to party." The youths had parked their cars and private buses haphazardly on the narrow roads, troubling villagers who called Loni Kalbhor police around 10.30 pm to complain. Soon, Pune rural police raided the bungalow.
Police said the city jeweller and the owner of the bungalow, Chittaranjan Ashtekar's sons, Alok and Sushil, were also held.
Their uncle Balasaheb Ashtekar, said, "Alok and Sushil were not at the party. They gave the bungalow after a request from one of their friends.
Around midnight, police called and arrested them. They were unaware the youngsters planned to consume liquor." All the arrested youth were granted bail by judicial magistrate (first class) R M Bhagwat.
The eight arrested for organising the party were released on a bond of Rs 10,000 each while 80 were released on a bond of Rs 2,000 each.

Girls punched, kicked in Raipur
Raipur: Protesting against the incident in which Hindu right-wing groups publicly slapped, kicked and blackened the faces of girls at several places opposing Friendship Day celebrations, Congress legislators on Monday slammed the BJP government for police inaction, forced an adjournment of the Assembly and later staged a walkout.
Raising the issue during zero hour, Dharamjit Singh of the Congress said activists of Dharam Sena, Bajrang Dal and other right-wing outfits assaulted girls and boys at several places while the police remained a mute spectator. All his party colleagues rose on their feet, raising slogans and demanding the resignation of Home Minister Nankiram Kanwar.
Alleging that these right-wing outfits enjoyed the patronage of the BJP government, Leader of the Opposition Ravindra Choubey, Nandkumar Patel and other Congress legislators alleged that such incidents, that too in the presence of policemen, clearly indicated that goonda elements had a free run in the state.
"Dharam Sena and Bajrang Dal had sprinkled instant adhesives like quick fix on the hair of girls even as they were slapped, punched and kicked at public parks and restaurants on the Friendship Day," said Patel. "This culture is not acceptable. These elements are trying to vitiate the social atmosphere and disturb harmony in Chhattisgarh."
As Legislative Affairs Minister Brijmohan Agrawal rose to protest against the Opposition remarks, the Congress members raised slogans against the BJP government, forcing Speaker Dharamlal Kaushik to adjourn the House for 10 minutes. When the House re-assembled, the Congress legislators continued to press for an explanation from the Home Minister for police inaction.
The Home Minister informed the House that five people had been arrested in connection with the incident while 10 policemen were suspected.
Dissatisfied with the reply, the Opposition members sought to know the names of suspended policemen and continued to raise slogans. Later, the Leader of the Opposition led the walkout by the Congress members, alleging that vandalism was happening in the guise of protecting Hindu culture and traditions.
Meanwhile, State Women Commission chairperson Vibha Rao condemned the incident, saying the commission would follow it up with the police to take a stern action against those who punched and kicked young girls and boys in parks and restaurants.
"Nobody has the right to behave in such a manner. It would have been better if these organisations protested against the atrocities in the name of 'tonhi' -- the practice of branding women as witches and attacking them -- prevailing in the state," she added.
However, Raipur Superintendent of Police Dipanshu Kabra said, "Half a dozen people have already been arrested. We are in the process of identifying those involved in these acts, and cases would be registered against them on the charges of eve-teasing and under other provisions of the IPC."

In her compliant, Surendra Jaatav's wife Dharmwati claimed some members of the Jat community had been forcing her husband to work for free in their homes and fields. She alleged that on Sunday night, seven youths from the neighbouring Chittora village stopped Jaatav in the forests and beat him to death. Based on the complaint, the police have arrested Gaurav, Nitin, Amit, Girish, Ticky and Bhure, while a hunt is on to nab one Debu.
However, the police have found that Surendra had been arrested earlier for cow slaughter and had been warned by the villagers not to take away cattle. They beat up the accused and reportedly called the police," said Ghaziabad SSP Raghubir Lal. The police said the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to injuries. But his family members refuted that this was the reason behind his murder.

Man dies before cops reach him
Panchkula: A 60-year-old ex-serviceman from Manimajra died after being hit by a car and lying injured on the road with no police help reaching on time. Jagat Singh was hit by an unidentified vehicle at the Mansa Devi Tpoint around noon when he was walking back home from Panchkula. One Shoorvir Singh, an employee of Pallavi Hotel, who had come to the hotel for some work, was on his way back to Manimajra with his daughter when he saw the victim lying in a pool of blood. He rushed to the victim and called up the police control room twice. According to him, Jagat had been hit by two vehicles by the time he reached him. "As soon as I reached the victim, I called up the police control room twice, but nobody answered them. I tried for about 10 minutes to get help, and finally, an autorickshaw driver stopped and together we brought him to the hospital," said Shoorvir.

It was finally one Captain Piyush who managed to get through to the police control room around 12.05 pm. The police said they immediately flashed the message to PCR van 5, but it failed to reach on time, said Shoorvir.
Meanwhile, the victim was admitted in the hospital at 12.35 pm, according to hospital records, and "was gasping for breath." Doctors who attended to him in the emergency ward said he succumbed to injuries after a few minutes.
Shoorvir, who was there in the hospital till 1.45 pm, said neither any PCR van nor any policeman came to the hospital to inquire about the matter. Forensic report confirms victim was raped
Chandigarh: In a twist to the Neha murder case, the SIM card that the victim had been using has been traced to a Sector 51 resident, Vikramjeet Singh alias Vikram. Earlier, the family had told the police that the number she was using belonged to her friend, Jyotsana. Meanwhile, forensic report has confirmed that Neha was raped before being murdered.

The police are questioning Vikram and his role is under the scanner. Vikram was known to the girl as they had studied together in school. He now works as a teacher in Mohali. Vikram told the police that he knew Neha and gave her his SIM card three years ago. But he maintained that he had not met her for a year.

Incidentally, Neha's family did not know that their daughter was using a phone number issued in Vikram's name. The day she was murdered, her father, Rajinder Singh Ahlawat, had said that Neha changed her number only three days before and so, he was ignorant of her new number. He had also said that Neha had lost her own cellphone after it fell into water, and she had been using Jyotsana's spare number.
The revelation has further deepened the mystery for the police, as it is unclear why Jyotsana lied to the family that Neha was using her number and why the number was hidden from the family for three years.
Neha's cellphone is still untraceable, and so is her bag. Meanwhile, the tower location of Neha's cellphone showed that the youth who answered the call that day was in Sector 39 and heading towards Dadu Majra. He had switched off the phone around 9.30 pm. The youth had answered the call saying that the phone has been sold to him for Rs 500 and he was speaking from Badheri.
The police are also probing if the girl knew the perpetrators or if the crime was committed by someone having access to her. The police also suspect the involvement of more than one person in the crime. The police said that they have ruled out robbery as motive, as Neha's diamond ring and earrings were still intact.
The postmortem report of the victim has marked not less than 21 injuries on the body, which include bite marks and injuries on her private parts. The police also said that it is possible that the crime was committed in a fit of rage.
