Kolkata:
The International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive Haroon Lorgat has expressed disappointment over Eden Gardens losing out on the February 27 World Cup fixture between India and England.
In an email to Cricket Association of Bengal president Jagmohan Dalmiya, Lorgat said: “I am equally disappointed that the Eden Gardens couldn’t host the match. But believe me, it was not within my power to change the technical committee’s decision. I intend to meet you soon to clear up the misunderstanding.”
Earlier, Dalmiya had written to the ICC CEO assuring him that the venue would be ready by February 7, the deadline set by the world body for the Eden Gardens to be ready for the three non-India matches to be played on March 15, 18 and 20.
The CAB is hopeful to get the go-ahead from the ICC venue-inspection team that will visit the stadium on February 7. “We could have even organised the India-England match. Lorgat’s mail indirectly admitted that. But according to him, the ICC had no option but to cancel the fixture,” a Dalmiya associate told The Indian Express.
