The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry on Wednesday terminated the practicing license of a senior resident doctor Shrijoy P. Joshua from the reputed All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for allegedly molesting a minor patient.
Health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad ordered termination of Joshua’s services at the institute after getting initial reports related to the molesting incident.
Joshua was accused of sexually molesting an eight-year-old boy last month, admitted at AIIMS for the treatment of brain tumor.
When contacted, not just Y.K. Gupta, AIIMS spokesman confirmed the termination order against Joshua but a senior member of AIIMS’s Resident Doctors' Association (RDA) also took time to give his statement on the action.
“Based on circumstantial evidence and basic investigation, the doctor has been found guilty. His Master of Chirurgical (degree) registration has been cancelled and his practicing license has been terminated,” said the doctor, who wished to stay unnamed.
About the alleged sexual abuse incident
As per the police complaint filed by victim’s family on Jan. 31, they had admitted their son, suffering from brain tumor, to AIIMS’s neurosurgery ward on Jan. 18 for a brain tumor surgery.
The child underwent surgery on Jan. 20 and was released from the hospital four days later (Jan. 24).
The filing further stated that rather than looking happy, their son looked terrified and threatened all the time and only after a week, revealed that he was sexually molested on Jan. 23 (a day before he was discharged) by one of the doctors, who had operated on him.
After finding out about their minor son’s horrifying experience, victim’s parents filed an FRI, charging the doctor with intimidating a minor and attempt to sodomy.
"My wife saw the doctor come out of the duty room with my child. My child can recognize him," had said child’s father.
Investigations into the matter still on
On finding out about the incident, AIIMS had announced its own investigation into the matter and had also promised to take strict action if the doctor was found guilty.
AIIMS is set to reveal its final report on Feb. 3, which also will be made available to police on the same day.
As per a senior police official, they have not got any reports regarding the incident from AIIMS so far, however are expecting it by Thursday evening.
“We would then take action in the case,” said the officer.
