London: UK-based Amnesty International on Thursday regretted the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to reject calls in India to terminate Dow chemicals` sponsorship for London Games, saying the organisers have failed to make a fair assessment of the issue.
Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has repeatedly expressed its opposition to Dow Chemicals as one of the sponsors for the London Olympic Games, because of its ownership of the infamous Union Carbide which was responsible for the worst industrial disaster in India.
The IOC on Thursday rejected the call to terminate Dow Chemicals` sponsorship deal with it for the 2012, London Games.
"Unbelievably the IOC says Dow is committed to `good corporate governance`, shocking, when you consider all the facts and that the company refuses liability for a corporate disaster of the scale of Bhopal, creating a toxic legacy for London 2012," the human rights body said in a statement here.
"London Olympic Organisers have failed to make a fair assessment of the issue surrounding Dow`s responsibility to the victims of Bhopal. They have repeatedly refused our request for a meeting", the statement added.
It is extremely disappointing that Olympic organizers continue to side with Dow Chemical Company while refusing to listen to legitimate concerns over the company`s sponsorship of the London games, Amnesty said.
