Bail for Ahlawat, Haryana cop accused of molestation

,
Yamunanagar:  ahlawatstory.jpgA man who retired as one of Haryana's senior-most policemen has been granted anticipatory bail.  MS Ahlawat has been accused of molesting a woman lawyer in 2002.

At the time, he was the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Yamunanagar.  The case against him was registered a fortnight ago.  He has been missing since then.

The lawyer who is taking him on says the Haryana Police refused to register her case against Ahlawat. She finally resorted to a hunger strike in front of the office of the Deputy-General of Police (DGP). That embarrassed the police into accepting her complaint.

When Ahlawat allegedly molested her, SPS Rathore was the head of the Haryana Police.  Rathore had himself been accused of molesting a 14-year-old - Ruchika Girhotra.   A complaint against him was filed in 1990. No action was taken against him and Rathore's career flourished. In 1993, Ruchika committed suicide. Recently, Rathore was sentenced to 18 months in prison for molesting a minor.

Ahlawat retired as Inspector-General.
