Panchayat asks village to return girl or face abduction
Greater Noida: A caste panchayat in Greater Noida has threatened to abduct a girl and two boys from a Dalit village if a Brahmin girl, who allegedly eloped with a Jatav boy on June 24, was not sent back home.
The panchayat issued the diktat after Priyanka Sharma (21), daughter of Rajendra Sharma of Mandaiya village, allegedly eloped with one Sanjay Jatav (24), of Daula village. Village elders from Mandaiya held a panchayat in at the boy's house in Daula and decided that if the girl was not sent back, the Brahmin villagers will abduct a girl and two boys from the Dalit village.
Sanjay's father Kanchi Jatav claimed the girl's family held him and his brother hostage for some time on Sunday.
"When the police were informed, the Brahmins fled... but they threatened to abduct a girl.
We have sent our women out of the village till the matter is resolved," he said, adding that he had no clue where his son and the girl were.
Gautam Budh Nagar's SP (Rural) Surender Verma said the police have registered a case of attempt to murder and criminal intimidation against 40 villagers from Mandaiya.
"We have warned the community against any unlawful action. The whereabouts of the couple are still unknown and we have assured that they will be protected when they return," Verma stated.
"An addition platoon of armed police have been deployed in the village. A Circle Officer and two inspectors have also been camping in the village," he added.

Eight engg students held for murder
Chennai: The Chennai police have so far arrested eight engineering students in connection with the murder of a student on Sunday. Nirbhay Kumar Singh, a third-year student of a deemed university, was killed in a brutal assault by students of another similar institution in what is believed to be a rivalry over admission business, a widespread practice in the self-financed, privately-run professional institutions.
"Including the two, Sanjay Singh and Saurav Chandra, detained on Monday, we have so far arrested eight students of Sathyabama University for the murder. In all, we suspect 20 students to be involved in the incident in one way or another," said Assistant Commissioner of Police K N Murali, adding that three special teams have been formed to nab the rest.
Nirbhay, a student of Dr MGR University, was trying to get a student from his home town Ranchi to join his university. But before he could secure the admission, a group from Sathyabhama University, another private deemed institution, got him a seat in their college, leading to a quarrel, officials said.
When Nirbhay went to question the student along with two of his friends, they were confronted by the rival gang who chased the trio in their car.
Bike-borne Nirbhay was brought down after his vehicle was hit from behind, and beaten up with iron rods and clubs that led to his death late on Sunday night.

Patient beats another to death
Pune: In yet another incident at the Yerawada Mental Hospital, a schizophrenic patient thrashed to death another patient on Sunday morning. Deceased Dinesh Ganpat Dalvi (21) was undergoing treatment at the Visava Ward in the mental hospital. A complaint of murder has been lodged at the Yerawada police station against Raju Chowdhary (45) for allegedly beating Dalvi to death.

The complaint was lodged by Jitendra Jagtap (43), a hospital staff member. Jagtap told the police that he went to the Visava ward on hearing some noise.

He found Dalvi lying unconscious on the ground. He was told by others that Chowdhary had brutally thrashed Dalvi following a brawl between the two. The hospital staff admitted Dalvi to Sassoon Hospital for treatment where he died on early Monday morning.

Hospital authorities said this was the third time that Chowdhary was admitted to the hospital. On earlier two instances, he was discharged after doctors felt that he had recovered. Investigation officer, assistant police inspector M B Khandale said Chowdhary is a native of Daund. "It is not possible to interrogate Chowdhary properly as he is a patient of schizophrenia. We have not arrested him either," he said.

Khandale further said the hospital is severely short staffed due to which it was difficult for them to keep a proper watch on the inmates. Dr Manohar Yadav, Medical Superintendent of Regional Mental Hospital at Yerawada said an inquiry committee has been appointed to probe the incident that led to the death of Dalvi.

On March 21 this year, 45-year-old Kacharu Devde at the Yerawada Mental Hospital was brutally assaulted by fellow inmate Mangesh More (25) that led to his death on the spot. The 2,400-bed hospital is the largest in the state for treatment and care of mentally ill patients. At present, there are 1,800 patients and according to the government of India norms, there should be one attendant for every seven patients. Of 480 posts of attendants at the hospital, 51 are vacant, Yadav said.
