Deceased student’s kin attack college

HYDERABAD: Tension prevailed at a private engineering college at Itikyal in Mahabubnagar district today as the parents of a girl student, who committed suicide two days ago in the college hostel, attacked the college damaging the furniture. They staged a protest alleging that the negligent college management was responsible for the girl’s death.Police, quoting the suicide note purportedly written by the girl, said she ended her life over petty differences with a roommate.Ashiya Begum (23), MBA first year student in Kottam Engineering College at Itikyal under the Alampur police sub-division, was found hanging in her hostel room by fellow students on February 5.A native of Rajole in the district, she had been staying in the college hostel. “Ashiya was alive when the students saw her hanging. They tried to save her by providing first aid and later shifted her to the government hospital at Kurnool where she died,” Alampur deputy superintendent of police M Mahesh said.On the same day, police recovered a suicide note purportedly written by Ashiya Begum in which she held none responsible for her death.“The girl had minor differences with another student who used to stay in her hostel room. She apologised to the girl and also to her parents for committing suicide,” Mahesh said quoting the suicide note.Itikyal police registered a case under Section 174 (suspicious death) and took up investigation.Meanwhile, today morning the parents and relatives of the girl along with some people of their village staged a dharna in front of the college holding the college management responsible for her suicide. Student leaders of various unions supported their protest.“My daughter is not so meek to commit suicide. The college management is responsible for her death. There is no warden to take care of the girl students of the hostel for the past two months,” they agitating parents complained.The protestors later damaged the furniture in the college. Police rushed to the spot and dispersed them. The protestors later squatted on the national highway stalling traffic for more than an hour.Based on a complaint by Ashiya Begum’s father, Basheer Ahmed, police registered cases under Section 306 (abetment to commit suicide) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) against the college management.“The college management should have informed the girl’s parents soon after she attempted suicide. But they  did not do so,” the DSP said.Police said they would also book the protestors for blocking traffic and damaging the furniture of the college.
